How to deal with Stretch Marks
👼 Dealing with Postpartum Stretch Marks
Stretch marks are a common concern, and while they often occur post partum, stretch marks can also arising during adolescence or times to rapid body /weight changes.
It's important to consider that stretch marks are NORMAL, but if they bother you, there are some treatment options- see below.
Expectation Management:
Set realistic expectations: while we aim for improved appearance, complete skin restoration isn't possible. However, my multimodal approach is showing promising results.
Prevention:
Research suggests moisturising the skin might be able to prevent stretch marks, but there is no magic cure. There is also evidence that silicone gel can be used to prevent striae (stretch marks) related to pregnancy- used daily from 26 weeks the study showed 30% reduction in stretch marks.
Treatment: (one you have them)
Treat early when stretch marks are red. White marks are harder to treat.
At-Home Care:
1. Moisturiser: apply daily. Extra additives show limited evidence. There is no miracle cream so don't go nuts OR
2. Silicone Gel: biopsy studies show increased collagen and reduction in pigmentation. About 50% of patients saw improvement (not resolution). You can purchase these at the pharmacy or in the clinic (e.g. "Stratamark" Available in our clinic.
3. Retinoids: Prescription-grade "Retrieve" (needs a script e.g. from your GP) . Avoid if pregnant/ breastfeeding. Apply at night, wash in AM. YOU must combine with SPF and moistursier are a must due to increased sun sensitivity. Not suitable for very thin/sensitive skin- discuss with your doctor.
In Clinical Options:
These devices boost the healing response, increase collagen and reduce vascularity. Begin early for best results - when marks are red.
a) Skin Pen/microneedling
b) Tixel
c) Vascular Lasers/IPL
d) NDYag 1064nm
e) Ablative lasers (CO2 or erbium)
We need to avoid local anesthesia if you are pregnant/breast feeding, but if we can use it, this allows us to use higher settings and get a better healing response.
My clinic protocols combines Tixel with IPL or vascular laser, depending on your skin type. This combo is working a treat for my ragged dog bite scar after only 2 sessions- I did not use local and this was manageable (for small areas).
